Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC), the regulatory body for the financial markets in Cyprus, requires individuals working in regulated entities under its supervision to hold relevant certifications.  
 

In this page you can find information about CySEC's certifications and you can online practice tests to help you prepare for CySEC's AML examination. The tests are constantly updated to reflect new material.

  • The Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) offers several examinations to ensure compliance and professional standards within the financial industry:   
     

    • CySEC Basic Examination: This exam focuses on fundamental knowledge of the Cypriot financial services regulatory framework. It is suitable for individuals seeking specific positions or those who require a basic understanding of CySEC regulations.

    • CySEC Advanced Examination: This comprehensive exam covers a wide range of topics related to the financial services regulatory framework, including investment services, market abuse, and risk management. It is designed for individuals seeking to work in various roles within CySEC-regulated entities.

    • CySEC AML Examination: This exam specifically addresses Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Combating the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) regulations. It is mandatory for individuals appointed as AML Compliance Officers at CySEC-regulated entities.

  • A CySEC certified person is a person who has passed either the Basic, Advanced or AML certification and is enrolled:
     

    • For Basic and Advanced examination: in the public register of certified persons

    • For AML examination: in the public register of AML compliance officers

  • Basic: €200

    Advanced: €300

    AML: €300


    You don’t need to pass the Basic to take the Advanced examination.

  • Basic: 60 minutes for 50 multiple-choice questions.

    Advanced: 90 minutes for 70 multiple-choice questions.

    AML: 60 minutes for 40 multiple choice questions

  • No. When you register for the exam, CySEC will notify you about the relevant examination and time that you will be taking the exam.

  • You may apply for any of the above examinations at CySEC’s website.

  • CySEC will provide the Workbook for the exam preparation within a week from the date the candidate has registered for the examination.

  • For all three examinations the pass rate is 70/100. After the examination procedure is completed, the score appears automatically on the computer screen of the candidate.

  • The examinations are available in English and Greek language.

  • No. You only get the right to register in CySEC’s relevant public register.

  • A few days after the exam, you will receive an email with the score and the instructions on how to register to CySEC’s relevant register, including the relevant form. You may enroll to the public register within 4 weeks.

    There is no charge to register in the CySEC’s public register. You are only required to pay for the annual renewal at the beginning of each year.

  • CySEC cannot suggest an organization offering preparation courses, neither preapproves such courses. CySEC considers the study of the relevant material satisfactory to prepare each candidate for the exam.

  • You need to renew your registration in the public register every year, within two months from the end of each calendar year. The renewal form is activated only during this certain period on the CySEC website. Persons who do not renew their registration during that period, they are automatically deregistered from the certification registers.

  • The renewal fee is €80 for each certification.

  • Yes, according to CySEC’s renewal process, you need to complete for every year Continued Professional Training (CPT) seminars.
     

    For Basic and Advanced, you need to attend seminars relevant to the regulations covered in the material. Same for AML.

  • For Basic certification: 10 hours

    For Advanced certification: 15 hours

    For AML certification: 10 hours
     

    For persons who are registered in the public register for both, the Basic and AML certification: a total of 15 hours (5 hours for the Basic and 10 hours for AML).
     

    For persons who are registered in the public register for both, the Advanced and AML certification:  a total of 20 hours (10 hours for the Advanced and 10 hours for AML).
     

    You do not need to complete any CPDs for the year which you have passed the examination.

  • Persons who want to work in CIFs (Cyprus Investment Firms) or their tied agents for the provision of specific services. You can find more information here.

  • Yes, up to eight (8) working days prior to the exams date and pay the fee of fifty (€50) for the examination and execution of the requested change by completing the relevant form.

  • Yes, by notifying CySEC in writing, five (5) working days prior to the exams date. The candidate must pay a fee of fifty €50 euro for the withdrawal of his application and at a subsequent stage the Commission will refund him the examination fee paid.

  • In case a person does not attend the examination, he is not entitled to a refund of the fees paid.
